The Building of MNAC (National Art Museum of Catalonia) was constructed for the International Exhibition of Barcelona of 1929.

The urgency of the construction of the building and a few quality issues of the materials  used,  made the Palau National acknowledge serious structural deficiencies. A major rehabilitation was required before becoming host of the MNAC.

To get to MNAC you need to leave behind the waterfalls and the Carles Bugas fountains (also were made to the Expo), which give joy and color to the route.

At night, the fountains are illuminated, and it’s a spectacle that worths visiting. (in a next post I will propose an activity that you can do with your children while visiting the fountains).

DISCOUNT TICKETS TO MNAC

General admission costs 12 euros (free for children under 16 years), and is valid for two days during one month from the date of purchase. It’s a good idea, because trying to see all the Museum at once (and with children!) can be exhausting.

In addition, there are several possibilities of discounts: Combined entrance MNAC and Poble Español, for 18 euros. Or as a member of friends of MNAC.

ART COLLECTION MNAC

The Museum has various collections of Gothic, modern art, numismatics, drawings, engravings, posters and photography. But what makes MNAC stand out for is its Roman Art collection, one of the most complete art collection in the world art.

Also includes a large background of art works from Renaissance and Baroque periods, thanks to the legacy of the Thyssen Bornemisza collection (which was previously located in the monastery of Pedralbes), and the collection Cambó.

We highlight three favorite areas: the area of modern art, with sculptors such as Juli González (among others). The spectacular pantocrator of San Clemente de Tahull . And the paintings of the Chapter House of the monastery of Santa María de Sigena.

ONE OF THE BEST VIEWS OF BARCELONA

The outdoor terrace of the MNAC it also belongs to LAIE. After the visit to the Museum, what a great plan to sit outdoors and have a lemon granita enjoying one of the best views of Barcelona.

Unfortunately the photos do not make such impact because the day was a little cloudy.

But you can see the cosmopolitan atmosphere, often enlivened by street musicians.

bcncolours_MNAC10

Plenty of space for the children to run and play, beautiful views, good pictures, and a cafeteria with a complete offer: soft drinks, ice-creams, granitas, shakes, sandwiches, pastries, coffees, mojitos..

As it was Thursday, we could enjoy a free guitar concert in one of the courtyards of the building (the photo on the left is from the Twitter of  @MNAC_museu. We also appear, it’s easy to find us, we are the only ones with children hehe)

What a complete day: fountains + museum + iced lemon juice+ terrace with views + guitar concert …
