Last weekend, we visited Aitona, Lleida, to enjoy the colors of the blooming peach trees. An experience for nature lovers and those who appreciate vibrant hues. It’s a getaway recommended for spring when the trees are in full bloom. The Aitona in Bloom experience is organized from March 11 to March 24, 2024, this year.

VISITING AITONA IN BLOOM AS A FAMILY

Aitona is a town in Lleida, about two and a half hours from Barcelona. It’s an area where agriculture is the economic center. Over time, Aitona’s fields have become filled with peach trees that, during March, bloom, giving the surroundings a wonderful pink color that delights everyone who visits.

From Aitona, and especially through the Fruiturisme platform, they are encouraging tourism in the area to showcase its fruit-rich heritage, landscapes, and culture. On their website, they offer various options for visitors to explore the area and discover all its richness. You can book walking tours led by local farmers, bike excursions, gastronomic packages, and much more.

WALKING EXCURSIONS THROUGH AITONA’S FIELDS

We had heard about Aitona, but what motivated us to visit were the wonderful photos we saw on Instagram. We knew the chosen weekend wasn’t the best since the pink flowers were in their last weeks of blooming, but we wanted to go anyway.

We decided to wake up early to arrive promptly and make the most of the day. It was a great decision because there were hardly any people when we reached Aitona, and the journey from Barcelona was very pleasant.

Aitona provides maps with recommended walking routes. They suggest three self-guided routes through the orchard paths and along the Segre River bank. The routes are: Sierra Brisa Route, Fruit Tree Route, and Natural Green Path Aitona-Soses. The routes take approximately one and a half to two and a half hours.

BIKE TOURS THROUGH AITONA’S PEACH TREE FIELDS

As you know, we enjoy biking. On other occasions, we’ve talked about some bike excursions for children in Barcelona and its surroundings. So, from what we saw, the plan to visit Aitona by bike seemed like a good option. And we were right.

Biking is perfect for following the self-guided routes, as there isn’t much incline, the terrain is easy to traverse, and you can adjust the route duration according to your needs.

It also allows you to move away from the more touristy routes, and with kids, the experience is very enjoyable.

TIPS FOR VISITING AITONA WITH CHILDREN

Here are some tips that worked for us and are worth considering if you visit Aitona with children:

  • Wake up early to make the most of the first few hours of the day when there are fewer people. After 12-1 PM, there’s a flood of tourists on the paths, and it loses its charm.
  • Bring sunscreen; this year was quite hot, and we reached 25 degrees. So, short-sleeved shirts and sunscreen are essential.
  • Don’t forget mosquito repellent cream. Being surrounded by fruit trees means there are many bugs and mosquitoes. We forgot it and regretted it! (A word to the wise is enough! 🙂)
  • Bring water (and if you can freeze it, even better)
  • Food. In the field area, there are no restaurants or bars, so it’s a good idea to bring something to eat. We had planned a picnic, and it was very enjoyable. We found an area with some shade and took advantage of the good weather for a family picnic.
